Joe's Farm Grill
About this place
Joe's Farm Grill is housed in the childhood home of its owner, Joe Johnston, a Gilbert native who grew up on a family farm. His father, Jim, bought the land in 1960 and farmed cotton with his wife Virginia and their three sons. When Gilbert's rapid growth threatened to swallow the farm in the late 1990s, Joe decided to keep part of it and build a neighborhood around the idea of agriculture. That neighborhood became Agritopia, and construction began in 2001.
A farmhouse turned burger stand
Joe converted the family's original home, built in 1966, into a retro-futuristic burger stand with a butterfly roof. The restaurant has been serving since 2006, and the farm next door supplies much of what is on the plate, from lettuce and tomatoes to beets and basil, along with eggs and herbs from the Johnston Family Farm.
Burgers, pizzas and barbecue
The menu is known for burgers, pizzas and barbecue, and the Fresh as Can Be Fontina Burger is one of the dishes the restaurant is best known for. The direct line from garden to plate is what sets it apart from a standard burger stand.
The setting
The farmhouse setting leaves plenty of room outdoors. Hours can shift with the season and Gilbert's summer heat, so check before you go.
